Who We are

First Step is a community project for families with young children which is based in the Musselburgh East housing estate. We are an independent Voluntary Organisation funded by East Lothian Council and other funding bodies.

First Step was set up in 1990 by a group of local parents who wanted somewhere safe and comfortable where they could meet and their children could play. The continued involvement of families and the local community in all aspects of First Step has been key to its success. The project has developed its services to meet local needs, while continuing to be managed by a community led management committee and employing a staff team to support local families.

Our Aim

First Step aims to provide opportunities for local families with young children to make positive choices in their lives by providing supportive centre-based and outreach activities which encourage parents and children to develop their self-esteem, confidence and skills.

What we provide

First Step takes a holistic approach to working with local families by offering the following services and activities:

- Parenting support, individually and in groups
- Nursery provision for children aged 1 - 4 and funded eligible two year olds
- Funded places for 3 and 4 year olds
- Groups and courses for parents
- Outreach and family support
- Counselling
- A grandparents group
- A dedicated family room
