Counselling Service at First Step Community Project

What type of Counselling do we deliver at First Step?

We deliver both Person-Centred Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Sessions are generally 50 minutes long and are offered in blocks of 12-15 weeks. Sessions take place at the same time and on the same day each week.

For more information about the different types of counselling that we offer please see the BACP website for more details: https://www.bacp.co.uk/about-therapy/types-of-therapy/

How do we deliver Counselling at First Step?

We have a designated Counselling room that is used for 1:1 counselling sessions.

How can I refer myself or someone else to the counselling service?

To access the counselling service you must be a parent to a child 0-8 years (or parent-to-be) and live in the Musselburgh, Whitecraig and Wallyford . You can refer yourself or someone else by downloading the Counselling Referral Form. All completed forms are to be emailed to the Project Manager at projectmanager@firststepmusselburgh.co.uk

Our counselling waiting list is currently open.

Counselling Crèche

Where funding and availability permits, we may be able to offer parents a free crèche that takes place while the parent attends a session.

Who delivers the Counselling Service at First Step?

We actively encourage Counselling Students to complete placements at First Step, and rely on students and volunteers to deliver this service. All students and volunteers are subject to PVG scheme checks and must provide proof of qualifications and/or course membership to complete a placement or volunteer here. All students and volunteers receive regular supervision from a qualified counselling practitioner and must be registered with the relevant supervisory agency (such as the BACP).

There are currently no student placements available, and we will update this page when placement spaces become available again.

If you are interested in completing a counselling placement at First Step please email the Project Manager at projectmanager@firststepmusselburgh.co.uk for more information.

Confidentiality and the Counselling Service

First Step works under the duty of confidentiality and the work we undertake is based on trust and respect. There are times when we may need to break confidentiality when we have a Duty of Care to a vulnerable adult or child. Please see the policies: Child Protection Policy and Procedures and Adult Protection Policy and Procedures for more information about this.

You have the right to request to see any information or recording that First Step hold about you or your child at any time.  To make this request please contact the Project Manager at projectmanager@firststepmusselburgh.co.uk . Please see our Data Protection Policy
